WASHINGTON — Oh, SNAP. Fast-food chains, particularly in California, have raked in more than $524 million in taxpayer funds through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in the past three years, according to estimates from a group of lawmakers. While government-subsidized SNAP is typically intended for at-home food and beverage consumption for low-income Americans, its Restaurant Meals Program component, a k a RMP, has expanded in many states since around 2019 and been loosened to allow participants to eat at chains such as Subway, McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, KFC, Dairy Queen.
