The Long Island Rail Road was thrown into chaos during the morning commute Wednesday after a train struck debris that had fallen in an East River tunnel, officials said. Eight of 11 LIRR lines were delayed or cancelled as passengers in the train had to be evacuated from the tunnel, one of four under the river that are operated by Amtrak and used by several commuter lines. The havoc included trains diverted to Grand Central Madison and others forced to end service at Jamaica, where passengers had to transfer to subway lines or other trains to reach Manhattan.
