ChatGPT has solidified its position as the world's most popular mobile app in early 2026, overtaking traditional social media giants like TikTok and Instagram with hundreds of millions of downloads and massive monthly active user growth, as artificial intelligence tools reshape how people communicate, create and consume content on smartphones. Data from industry trackers such as Business of Apps and Appfigures show that generative AI applications, led by OpenAI's ChatGPT, captured unprecedented user interest in 2025 and carried that momentum into 2026. ChatGPT alone amassed around 770 million downloads worldwide in 2025, the highest single-year total for any app, while maintaining strong engagement into the new year.
