California’s punishing cost of living is hitting single moms especially hard — with five metro areas in the state ranking among the worst places in America for women raising children on their own. Fresno, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Jose, Los Angeles and Riverside-San Bernardino all sat at the bottom of a list from Single Mothers Grants examining where solo moms face the biggest financial and quality-of-life squeeze. California itself was ranked among the three toughest states for single mothers, alongside Nevada and New Mexico.
