Long Beach is preparing to slash more than 260 jobs and eliminate another 200-plus vacant positions as officials scramble to close a $58 million budget deficit — with proposed cuts hitting public safety, libraries and youth programs. City Manager Tom Modica’s proposed $4 billion 2026-27 budget, unveiled Thursday, would eliminate about 4% of the city’s nearly 6,000 employees. The cuts represent the first proposed general fund layoffs in almost six years, after soaring labor costs, legal payouts, weaker tax revenue and the loss of federal grants squeezed city finances.
