Why finding the next homegrown star has become a challenge for the Mets and Yankees

With pitchers and catchers reporting in both Tampa and Port St. Lucie, it’s a good time to wonder: Who will be the next homegrown breakout star in New York? Has there been one in The Bronx since Aaron Judge burst onto the scene for good with his historic rookie season in 2017? And now that Pete Alonso is an ex-Met — as well as Brandon Nimmo and seemingly half of last year’s roster — where do the Mets look for their top farm-raised talent? There’s no obvious choice, and as we’ve seen repeatedly over the years, even when a prospect seems a sure bet, it typically doesn’t work out.
