Veteran point guard Malcolm Brogdon has suddenly decided to retire one week before the Knicks open their season, he told ESPN in a statement. Brogdon, 32 years old and in a competition for the final roster spot with Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews, was a former second-round pick in 2016 and won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year during the 2022-23 campaign. While it’s unclear what prompted his decision to retire so late into training camp and the preseason, his exit now leaves the Knicks without an option for a true backup point guard behind Jalen Brunson.
