Former Formula One world champion Alan Jones has died at the age of 80 following a brief illness. A statement from Jones’ family, issued through Motorsport Australia, announced the death of the 1980 championship winner – who remains the last Australian to win the F1 title. Jones was only the second Australian to win the championship after Sir Jack Brabham, and topped the podium at 12 grands prix during a career that took in spells with Hesketh, Williams – with whom he won his title – and Arrows.
