NASA’s experimental X-59 QueSST jet celebrated its first year in flight with a trip to the Kennedy Space Center — recording 41 flights and a top speed that would cut long-haul flights times in half. The needle-nose jet, dubbed the “Son of Concorde,” is fast — designed to hit 925 mph, which is Mach 1. 4, and fly at 55,000 feet in the air, more than twice as high and nearly twice as fast as conventional airline jets.
