The kratom industry has poured millions of dollars into political action committees, candidate campaigns and lobbying efforts to fight blanket bans on products containing the opioid-like supplements and persuade lawmakers to target synthetic alternatives instead, records show. Leading the way is the American Kratom Association — which has spent more than $1 million on lobbyists over the past decade, including $443,000 alone this year, according to data tracked by OpenSecrets. com.
