A promising PhD student who vanished during a solo hike in California’s Eastern Sierra has been found dead days later after a frantic search. Vikram Mubayi, a chemical engineering doctoral candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was reported missing after his family lost contact with him during a weekend trip to the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest. Shortly after, Mubayi’s brother—writing under the Reddit username u/rudeasbench—posted a tragic update online: “Thank you to everyone here for the support, unfortunately he was found deceased.
