The Islanders’ toughest roster decision, at least for now, has been made for them. After suffering a lower-body injury in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Flyers, Cal Ritchie will miss the next 1-2 weeks, the Isles announced Friday. With the NHL’s roster deadline for opening night coming on Monday and the Islanders starting their season on Thursday night in Pittsburgh, that all but confirms that Ritchie, the 20-year-old prospect who spent the last three weeks mounting a furious push to be in that lineup against the Penguins, ultimately won’t be.
