The 43-year-old former businessman became defence minister in 2023, a year and half into Russia's invasion, and has spearheaded some of Kyiv's most sensitive wartime diplomacy -- with Russia and the West. He has also been embroiled in scandals during his tenure, accused of a lack of transparency and the subject of a probe into alleged abuse of power.
