New Jersey company recalls nearly 333 pounds of tuna over high histamine levels

A New Jersey seafood company has recalled nearly 333 pounds of tuna distributed across five states after health officials found high levels of a toxin linked to histamine poisoning. Buckhead Meat Company, doing business as Trinity Seafood in Lakewood, voluntarily launched the recall on July 24 after the New Jersey Department of Health notified the company that two tuna samples had tested for high levels of scombrotoxin. Scombrotoxin can cause scombroid poisoning, with symptoms appearing within minutes to two hours and often resembling an allergic reaction, including facial flushing, sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, hives and abdominal cramps.
