Data from industry trackers such as Business of Apps and Appfigures show that generative AI applications, led by OpenAI's ChatGPT, captured unprecedented user interest in 2025 and carried that momentum into 2026. ChatGPT alone amassed around 770 million downloads worldwide in 2025, the highest single-year total for any app, while maintaining strong engagement into the new year.
