Arctic air swept into the region Saturday, and will produce the coldest days of the year — and deadly wind chills as low as minus-20 degrees, forecasters said. While the mercury in New York City was expected to hit about 20 degrees, the wind chills will be dangerous — with “real feel” temperatures in the five boroughs alone reaching between -5 and -10, and parts of upstate even colder, meteorologists said In those conditions, hypothermia can happen in just minutes. Concerns for New York City’s homeless population have increased as deadly arctic temperatures plunge the region into a deep freeze.
