Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Monday ordered a 20% reduction in the number of military generals and flag officers, arguing that the policy will bolster “strategic readiness and operational effectiveness. ” The reductions will be implemented in two phases: In the first, a minimum of 20% of the military’s active-duty four-star generals and flag officers, or admirals, will be removed. In the second phase, an additional 10% overall reduction of generals and flag officers throughout the Department of Defense will take place, in conjunction with a “realignment of the Unified Command Plan.
